With a recipe from March 1996 McCall's Magazine
Preheat Oven to 350 Degrees
Spray baking sheet
3 cups + 1 tsp unsifted all purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup unsalted butter cut into pieces
1/2 cup raisins
1 tsp anise seed
1 1/4 cup buttermilk
In small bowl combine 3 cups flour, baking soda, sugar and salt, sift into large bowl.
With pastry blender, cut butter into dry mixture until it resembles coarse meal.
Stir raisins and anise seed into mixture.
Pour in buttermilk, stir with fork until dough comes together.
Knead 5 times in bowl. Turn out on floured surface and knead another 8 - 10 times.
Shape into a " round loaf and place on baking sheet.
Sprinkle remaining 1 tsp of flour over top of loaf.
Cut 1" deep X 4" long "X" across top (to let the fairies out!!)
Bake 45 - 50 minutes
